Block Bears set to play Thursday

JONESVILLE — Block High School remains undefeated in district play as it heads into a Halloween-night matchup against Montgomery High School Thursday.
Head coach Benny Vault Jr. said the Bears (3-5, 3-0) will have to continue to maintain their positive momentum when the Tigers (6-2, 2-1) come to town.
“They have good speed at the skill spots, and they’re pretty tough,” Vault said. “We’ve had some trouble against them in the past. Everyone has put a target on our backs, so our guys are going to have to come out and play really hard.”
With the game being a day earlier than usual, Vault said he’s had to bump up the team’s practice schedule by a day.
“We usually do weights, watch film and work on special teams on Mondays, but today we stepped everything up to make up for it,” Vault said Monday evening. “We treated (Monday) like it was Tuesday, then we’ll treat (today) like it’s Wednesday and Wednesday like it’s Thursday. We’ll do our walkthrough on Wednesday.”
Vault also said he’s hoping the Bears will keep doing well in district play in order to give them a top-10 seed heading into the playoffs.
“If we win out, I think we’ll end up in one of the top eight, and we’d get a home game,” Vault said. “Right now, we’re somewhere around 13. We’d still get a home game, but we would like to try to move up. I feel really good about it. As long as we get in, we’ll be OK.”
After beginning the season 0-5, Vault said he thinks the Bears’ best football is still ahead of them, even on the current three-game winning streak.
“I wasn’t worried when we were losing,” Vault said. “We had some people hurt and got them back, and we’re looking better every week. I feel really good about where we’re at.”
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Block.
