Block High School preview: Bears kept confidence, got win

JONESVILLE — Benny Vault Jr. and the Block High School football players remained confident.
Despite beginning the season 0-5, the Bears’ head football coach said expectations remained high as the team went into its district schedule last week. And after a 46-34 victory against St. Mary School Friday, Vault said his team finally had something to show for all of its confidence.
“We moved Trevor (Vault) back to quarterback, and he controlled the tempo of the game,” Vault said. “He threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and we rushed for 270 yards. Our offense was clicking.”
Though the Bears (1-5, 1-0) may have struggled out of the gate, Vault said he never stopped believing his team was destined for big things.
“I keep telling people we’re going to be in the championship game,” Vault said. “We’re just trying to get everything back in order. We have some tough teams in our district, but I think we’ll be OK.”
And Vault said he sensed that his players fed off their head coach’s confidence, because he never saw them lose confidence even as the losses piled up.
“I let them know not to worry about it, that we were in control,” Vault said. “We have seven coaches on staff, and it took a while for us to get on the same page, but the kids stayed confident. If you talk to them, they’ll tell you we’re going to win a championship, too.”
At the same time, it’s nice to finally have a win, Vault added.
“This weekend was so much more enjoyable,” Vault said. “St. Mary is usually one of the toughest teams in our district, but we came out and played hard.”
And having a strong non-district scheduled made a difference for the Bears, Vault said, even if it didn’t show up in the wins column.
“We play those tough games early in the season to teach them to play for four quarters,” Vault said. “As the game went on, you could tell (St. Mary) was getting a little winded, and we were still playing well.”
Up next for Block is Logansport High School (1-5, 0-1), where the Bears will travel Friday. Vault said the Tigers present a bit of an unknown factor for his team.
“They’re big, and they look very athletic on film,” Vault said. “We’ve never played them before, so this is a new adventure for the Block Bears, but it’s a new adventure for Logansport as well. It’s two-and-a-half to three hours away, so the biggest part of the trip is getting there. We need to cut down on penalties and continue to improve on the turnover margin, but I think we’re going to be fine if we do that.”
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday at Logansport.
