NATCHEZ — After more than six years in the former railroad depot on Broadway Street, The Old South Trading Post has moved to a new location.

Trading Post owner Jonathan Wood said the store moved to 714 Franklin St. and is still in the process of settling in.

“Moving is still moving, and when you have as many small items and as many cases as we have, it becomes challenging,” Wood said. “I did not realize how many items we had tucked away and put in corners. We had that place full.”

Old South Trading Post’s move comes after a notice to relocate was sent to the business nearly three months ago.

The city is forcing the store and the Cock of the Walk restaurant to relocate so the city can renovate the depot as part of its project to relocate the Natchez Farmers Market to the bluff and turn the depot into a product development center and office space.

The $2.5-million project is set to begin once the businesses have moved out.

Cock of the Walk is currently still operating in the depot.

Wood said when Old South Trading Post moved into the depot, the building was not an attraction for Natchez tourists. After the business embarked on extensive marketing around the country and internationally to promote Natchez tourism, Wood said the depot became a central retail and tourist information location.

“Our mission is to promote Natchez tourism and fill the needs of the people who are coming here and provide them with a memorable experience,” Wood said.

It takes the entire community, Wood said, to make tourism in Natchez successful.

“What we’re doing is not just for our store,” he said. “If all of us continue that philosophy, and everyone helps everyone, we will all do better.”
