The days by the pool and at the beach are coming to and end, and before we know it that school bell will be ringing.
The start of a new school year is an exciting time: new backpacks, seeing old friends, learning new teachers and routines.
But at my house a new school year means something else … football games!
I can’t say that it means football season because for my family football is alive and well 12 months out of the year!
Growing up in the South, girls are expected to know about a lot of things — how to hunt, fish and how to enjoy watching a football game.
However, I have come to realize that many ladies only have a very basic understanding of the game of football.
So last year with an idea that I saw on the Mississippi Coaches Wives Association’s Facebook Page, Cathedral had our first Pigskins and Pearls Dinner.
It gave the football moms a chance to get together, enjoy a meal and a brief lesson on football.
We had a fabulous time, so we decided to make it an annual event. This year’s Pigskins and Pearls Dinner will be at 6 p.m., Aug. 15 in the Cathedral Cafeteria.
Our very own coach Ron Rushing will give us an overview of summer workouts and camps, as well as share his thoughts on our upcoming team and season.
He will also give a simplistic explanation of football penalties. Ladies will have a chance to learn what holding, off sides, false start, pass interference, etc. mean.
The mothers of Cathedral’s senior football players and trainers will be honored, and the women behind our great Cathedral football coaches will also be introduced.
There will be wonderful door prizes to win, too.
This year, all the proceeds from the event will go to our booster club, the C Club. Tickets to the event are $10, and T-shirts are available to order for $15. They can be purchased, with cash or check only, at Just 4 You (next door to Sports Center).
We are asking that tickets be purchased in advance and presented at the door. The final day to purchase a T-shirt is Aug. 6 so they can be delivered to the dinner.
So please mark your calendars and secure your babysitters now, as this event is geared for ladies and high school girls only.
Please invite your friends and family! Any lady who wants to learn a little about football is welcome to attend. It doesn’t matter if you have a football player or not, or even if you have kids who attend other schools. Help us pack the cafeteria for Cathedral’s Second Annual Pigskins and Pearls: Where girls come to learn about football! And as always … Roll Wave!
