PINEVILLE, La. — The Concordia Dixie Youth 9-year-old All-Stars came into the first game of the state tournament looking for some offense.
But after Friday night’s performance against the host team, head coach Wayne Harveston said the search continues.
Concordia was on the wrong side of a 19-4 loss as the 9s dropped the first of three games in pool play. The 9s managed just two hits, and Harveston said his team continued to struggle in the batter’s box.
“There was no hitting, and we weren’t getting our pitches called,” Harveston said. “We walked a lot of batters, so it was kind of a self-inflicted thing.”
Xander Harveston took the loss for Concordia, pitching just one inning and giving up one hit and four walks while striking out one.
In order to turn things around, Harveston said his team would have to snap out of its mental funk quickly.
“They have to get in there and play their game,” Harveston said. “They’re going up there intimidated. I told them after the game that that’s not the team I’ve seen play (before) stepping onto the field right now.”
Pool play will continue today for the 9s, who face Shreveport at 10 a.m. today before playing Deridder at 2 p.m. today.
