NATCHEZ — Garrett Rentfro is no stranger to golf lessons, having participated in the Norman Puckett Junior Golf Academy at Duncan Park this summer.
But Rentfro and other young golfers got a treat Tuesday afternoon at Beau Pré Country Club, as members of the National Golf Association Tour were on hand to give a junior golf clinic.
Rentfro said every extra piece of information will help develop his golf game, and he recalled a piece of instruction Duncan Park Golf Course Superintendent Greg Brooking gave him.
“They’re pros, and they know what they’re talking about, so this is a good opportunity,” Rentfro said. “Mr. Greg said to be a sponge and soak up all the information I can get.”
The NGA Tour is in town this week for the Magnolia Bluffs Casino Classic, which begins match play Thursday, but NGA golfer Jarrod Barsamian said he didn’t mind taking time to teach the younger generation a thing or two about the sport he loves.
“We’re trying to teach them the basics,” Barsamian said. “Golf can be very complicated for someone who doesn’t understand it, so I want to help keep it fun for them.”
Barsamian also taught at the junior golf clinic at last week’s tournament in Mandeville, La., and he’s helped in summer clinics back home at Marsh Landing Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla. For Barsamian, he said teaching youth is like investing back into the sport he loves.
“I remember being their age, and I know golf is not an easy sport to play,” Barsamian said. “It may not be as fun (to them) as football or baseball, but I just want to get some kids that will get that itch and keep wanting to play.”
Young golfer Chase Kaiser said he’s learned the importance of aiming and following through whenever he swings the golf club.
“It’ll go farther if you follow all the way through,” Kaiser said.
Kaiser also said it’s helpful to have professional golfers teaching him the game.
“It’s face-to-face (lessons), which is better, because they can explain it to you when they’re closer,” Kaiser said. “It helps you get better, and they might know more (about golf) than some other people.”
Rentfro said he enjoys listening to the pros, and their mindset about golf rubs off on him.
“They’re nice, and they’re confident,” Rentfro said. “It feels good and it makes you happy, because they’re trying to help you get better.”
The NGA Tour will host a Pro-Am at 1 p.m. today at Beau Pré, where local golfers can pair up with members of the tour for a round of golf. The cost is $500 for a single player or $2,000 for a team of four.
