NATCHEZ — Morris and Evelyn Watson’s children are too young to realize it now, but their parents already know that the family’s new house will be where the family’s best memories are made.
The Watsons and their children, Brian Maxwell, 8, Alivia, 5, Aubriana, 3, and 7-month-old M.J., received the keys to their new Martin Luther King Jr. Street house Sunday at Habitat for Humanity’s dedication ceremony.
Morris said he envisions his house as a place for future generations in his family.
“I know it’ll be somewhere my children can grow up, and I want it to be somewhere for their children and their children,” he said.
Evelyn said the generosity of the Habitat for Humanity community overwhelmed her.
“We are just so thankful,” she said.
The Watsons, along with a team of Habitat volunteers, built the house, into which the Watsons are anxious to move.
Alivia and Aubriana will be sharing a room, but the girls are especially excited because their bedroom has two closets.
“This one will be for me and this one will be for her,” Alivia said pointing to the freshly painted doors in her room.
As for Brian, the decision of where to hang his Spiderman, Superman and Batman posters in his very own room is first on his mind.
But beyond just having his own room, Brian said the new house makes him happy.
“It makes me feel special,” he said.
The Watsons’ house is the 17th Habitat house in Natchez since the local Habitat’s inception in 1991 and was built by individual and student volunteers and volunteers from churches and civic organizations.
Habitat for Humanity International, based in Americus, Ga., is an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. House recipients are required to devote their own work hours to construction building up “sweat equity.”
Donations of money or construction materials and information on applications for a Habitat house or volunteer to work on the next house, can be made by contacting Habitat for Humanity at 601-445-8639 or 601-807-4956, or by mail at P.O. Box 100, Natchez, MS, 39121.
