NEW ORLEANS — A Jefferson County inmate who apparently walked away from the Jefferson County Community Work Center Saturday morning was apprehended Monday in New Orleans.
Mississippi Department of Corrections investigators captured Melvin Toney, 32, at 8 p.m. Sunday, according to an MDOC press release.
Toney is serving a seven-and-a-half year sentence for a cocaine possession conviction in Marion County.
Toney now faces extradition from Louisiana back to Mississippi, where he will possibly receive an additional five-year sentence if convicted of escape, according to the press release.
Toney reportedly left the Fayette facility at approximately 6 a.m. Saturday.
Toney was scheduled for release Jan. 12, 2014.
