Claims of infestation of lice in Concordia schools untrue, superintendent says

Vidalia — Concordia Parish Superintendent Paul Nelson said recent claims about an infestation of head lice at district schools are false.
Nelson said a concerned parent recently called the school’s central office seeking answers on why nothing was being done to address an alleged head lice outbreak at Vidalia Junior High School.
“This is the same old thing you get when a few kids have (head lice) and don’t take the necessary steps to clean it,” Nelson said. “We don’t have naps at the junior high so they’re not getting it by sharing the same pillow.
“They get it at home by sharing brushes or caps.”
Nelson said he’s spoken to administrators at the school who told him no outbreak existed to his knowledge and no reports of lice had been made to the school’s principal. Nelson also said, however, that the district does not perform routine, comprehensive checks for lice.
“We sent the nurse over there just to be sure,” Nelson said. “She said she couldn’t find any problems.”
