Burglar can’t keep hands off of fudge

NATCHEZ — As if cash isn’t enough to satisfy a criminal’s sweet tooth, a thief who burglarized Darby’s Monday night couldn’t resist grabbing a pan of fudge on the way out the door.
Darby’s Everything Under the Sun co-owner Darby Short said her husband, Dennis, discovered Tuesday morning that a burglar had forced open the door of the store and stolen a small amount of cash and a pan of fudge.
“That’s about 6 or 7 pounds of fudge,” Short said.
The deadbolt on the door was locked, Short said, but the latch on the French doors was up.
“The latch on the door was up, and they just pushed that door in … I don’t know if they just jiggled the door enough to get the latch on the bottom up or if it was left up,” she said.
Short said she and Dennis are thankful the burglary was not worse.
“My heart just sank when Dennis came up the steps and told me … but we feel really blessed that it wasn’t worse than it is,” she said.
Natchez Chief Danny White said police do not have any suspects at the time, but he said he does not believe the burglary is related to the recent rash of burglaries on North Pearl Street.
Anyone with any information about the burglaries should call NPD at 601-445-5565 or Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
