VIDALIA — The Vidalia High School boys basketball team finished the regular season on a positive note with an 84-70 win against Avoyelles High School Friday for senior night.

Vidalia rode a 32-point fourth quarter to its win, and Isiah Thompson and Julius Wilson led the raid for the Vikings with 21 points each. Head coach Robert Sanders said his team was close to flawless in the second half.

“We played great defense overall, and (in the fourth) we just got open and were able to drive and dish it out or pull up and hit jumpers,” Sanders said.

Led by Deion Browns six points in the first quarter, Vidalia jumped out to a 15-11 lead after one, but Avoyelles kept pace to make it 34-29 at intermission. Both teams scored 18 points in the third quarter.

Brown finished with 16 points, and Dee Whitley tallied 12 points for Vidalia. Avoyelles’ Quez Friels led in scoring with 24 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Taylor Pierite added 13 points for Avoyelles, D.J. Turner scored 12 points and Trey Williams had 10 points.

The Vikings finished 9-14 overall, 6-4 in district play. Sanders said his team won’t know if it made the playoffs until next Thursday.

“We just have to play the wait-and-see game,” he said. “We’ll have to travel if we get in, so we have to prepare for that, but at least we’d be in.”

Tierra Bell’s layup as time expired was a nice highlight in an otherwise forgetting game for the Lady Vikings on senior night.

Bell led Vidalia in scoring, but Avoyelles’ Takaylan Jacobs helped keep the Lady Vikings at bay with her 18 points.

Vidalia trailed 27-15 at the break. The Lady Vikings finished the season 3-20 overall, 0-10 in district.
