WOODVILLE — With an extra week to prepare, Wilkinson County Christian School head football coach David Wright will finally see his team in action tonight.

Originally scheduled to play Ben’s Ford Christian School last week, the Rams were forced into an open date after Ben’s Ford backed out of the game.

Wright said the bye week gave his players more time to focus on themselves.

“It gave us another week so we could evaluate our talent and get our ducks in a row,” Wright said.

Wright said his team didn’t change its approach in practice last week just because there wasn’t a game. Continuing to install the playbook has been a focal point leading into the start of the Rams’ season.

“We’ll keep adding to it each week,” Wright said. “We play a district opponent in Glenbrook (School) next week, so I doubt it will be fully installed by then. I’d like for them to have a good understanding of the offense by game two or three.”

Limited practice time means the Rams can only install so much each week. With the athletes in class until 3 p.m., and with the coaches only having them from 3 to 5, Wright said installing the playbook is a challenge.

“We have kids living an hour away, so that’s also a factor,” Wright said. “There are a lot of kids at different positions, too. Right now, we’re studying the playbook, and they’re doing everything we asked.”

The Rams will travel to Prentiss Christian School tonight, and Wright said his team would have to be prepared for two different looks by the Prentiss offense.

“They like to spread and do speed option and speed sweeps, and they also have a two-tight end power offense where they put everybody in the box,” Wright said. “We really have to be prepared for two different styles.”

Kickoff at Prentiss Christian is at 7 tonight.
