D’IBERVILLE — The T.M. Jennings 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars ran into the bright lights in D’Iberville Friday at the Little League State Tournament.
And D’Iberville’s squad took advantage of the starry-eye Natchez players, winning Game 1 in a best-of-three series 12-2.
“I think we just got a little nervous,” 11s and 12s coach Ernest Woods Sr. said. “Once we settled down, we began to play a little better. Under the lights is a big difference I guess. They also said they got a little tired on the ride over.”
Natchez’s Jakarri Caston took the loss on the mound, and Caston finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a double. Christ Scott was 1-for-2 with a double, Tyler Harris went 1-for-2, and Shavoke Herrington finished 1-for-3.
Natchez will take on D’Iberville again at 10 a.m. today, and Woods said he looks for his players to play much better in Game 2.
“They promised me it would be a different game,” Woods said.
BILOXI 18, T.M. JENNINGS 9s & 10s 0
The T.M. Jennings 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars got blown out in Game 1 of their three-game set against Biloxi, and head coach Cedric Green said he was at a loss to explain things.
“We just didn’t come out focused,” Green said. “Nobody was moving around like they were supposed to. They looked sluggish, like they were exhausted or something. I don’t know if it was from them being nervous or what. It shocked me.”
The game lasted just two innings before it was called. Starter James Singleton took the loss for Natchez. Trevon Henry, Rico Carr and Jaheim Ivory all went 1-for-1 for Natchez.
Natchez will play Bolixi again at 10 a.m. today.
