NATCHEZ — After a week of getting into soccer shape, the Adams County Christian School girls soccer team put their workouts to the test Saturday afternoon.
And head coach Jimmy Allgood said being in “soccer shape” made a big difference.
ACCS hosted Oak Forest Academy Saturday for two exhibition games, with the Lady Rebels coming out on the winning end in both, 4-2 and 3-2. Morning rain caused Copiah Academy, ACCS’s other guest, to go home, but skies cleared in the afternoon and allowed the two remaining teams to square off, Allgood said.
“Thank goodness we spent this past week getting into soccer shape,” Allgood said. “Our girls played against a much younger team, and I think our gas tanks were running slim for our girls in that second game.”
In Game 1, the Lady Rebels were led by Mollie Simpson, who scored two goals. Merritt Murray and Jordan Parker also scored for ACCS.
Game 2 was a different story, as ACCS and Oak Forest were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. Murray and Simpson scored the Lady Rebels’ two goals, but the two teams remained tied through two rounds of penalty kick shootouts. Finally, a team of Simpson, Murray, Parker, Madison Newman and Kerrigan Eidt beat Oak Forest 4-1 in the third set of penalty kicks.
With ACCS’s season just a couple of weeks away, Allgood said Saturday’s exhibitions helped create depth by giving his younger players some much-needed experience.
“The camp this week and our games (Saturday) helped a lot of our players who may not necessarily be starters,” Allgood said.
“Getting a full day of actual games will help their progression. We put them out there in real game situations against high school teams, and many of the younger, less experienced players stepped up and helped today.”
