RAYVILLE, La. — The Ferriday Gators got two wins against Winnsboro to win the Louisiana Dixie Debs District 5 championship Wednesday.

Aftor losing to Winnsboro 2-0 several days ago, the Gators bounced back by beating Winnsboro 4-2 and 2-0 in a doubleheader.

“The first time, their pitcher dominated us,” Gators head coach Rut Horne said. “We had probably seven or eight strikeouts. We had scoring opportunities, but the difference today was everyone hit the ball.”

Mollie Devening got the win in Game 1, while Ginny Daggett was the winning pitcher in Game 2.

With the win, the Gators will head to the state tournament in Ponchatoula, La., July 13.

“It feels good (being district champions),” Horne said. “I expected it. These girls have been here three or four different times, won district and gone on to state. The same core group has won state twice in different age groups and have been to the World Series twice. They think they can do it, and I tend to agree.”
