NATCHEZ — With the Norman Puckett Junior Golf Academy wrapping up Monday, Duncan Park Golf Course Superintendent Greg Brooking is turning his attention toward phase two of junior golf.
Duncan Park is set to host the Natchez Junior Golf Championship July 2, and Brooking said signup is now open for all local youth — not just the ones that came to the camp.
“We have 15 children signed up right now, and there’s no limit,” Brooking said. “We want every child to come out and participate.”
The format will be a three-hole tournament, and the cost for signup is $15, which includes food and drink. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. that day.
Brooking said he’s hoping parents will come out and support the local youth that do sign up for the tournament.
“At the junior clinic, we had 32 participants, which is probably more than we should have had,” Brooking said. “But we had some parents come out and help.
“We want to have one parent per every three-person group, and children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent.”
The tournament is sponsored mostly through private donations to the Norman Puckett endowment, plus entry fees, Brooking said. All of that is part of a plan to help promote golf to the youth of Natchez.
“The best thing a parent can do is give their children and opportunity, and things like this tournament and the clinic are opportunities,” Brooking said.
