NATCHEZ — Clay Arnold’s proposed “AYA football camp” is not an AYA camp at all, according to AYA President Rudy Wilson.
Wilson said while he has no problem with Arnold hosting a football camp to teach children fundamentals, but due to liability issues, Arnold can’t use the AYA name.
“I’m glad he’s doing it,” Wilson said. “I have no problem with it, and I commend him, because I think it’s a good thing. But it has nothing to do with AYA. From a league standpoint, we’re not associated.”
Wilson said Arnold has no affiliation with the league beyond refereeing a few games.
“People may come in with the pretense that AYA supports this,” Wilson said. “If someone gets injured, they might come to us, and we have nothing to do with it.”
Arnold said Friday that he had spoken to AYA officials and he’s working to correct the misunderstanding.
“It’s my error,” Arnold said. “I didn’t know I couldn’t mention AYA. We’re just going by the principals of AYA. We’re not actually playing (league games).”
