NATCHEZ — It was only fitting that Tommy Geohegan’s seventh hole-in-one on hole No. 7 Saturday afternoon.

Geohegan finished with an 81 on day one of the Beau Pré Club Championship, but his ace was definitely the highlight of the afternoon. He said he knew the shot was a good one when the ball left the club, but he didn’t know how good it was at first.

“I didn’t see it go in because the hole was behind the hump,” Geohegan said. “We got up there and couldn’t see it, and I said that it couldn’t have gone behind the green.”

As they soon found out, it went in the hole. Geohegan hit a hole-in-one two and a half weeks ago, and he said he wasn’t sure what’s behind his latest run of luck.

“I don’t know, but I hope I can keep it going,” Geohegan said.

Jordan Farmer and Casey Ham tied for first place with a 72 Saturday afternoon, setting themselves up nicely for a shot at the championship. For Farmer, the good start was especially nice, since his time on the golf course has been limited as of late.

“I haven’t been playing at all, and I usually play a little bit, but I’ve been working a lot,” Farmer said. “I wanted to go out, play smooth and see what happened.”

And what happened was a start to the tournament that Farmer said he was quite happy with.

“I planned on practicing a bunch leading up to the tournament, but I never got around to it,” Farmer said.

“More than anything, golf is all about what’s going on in your head. You either have a good swing or you don’t. You just have to get your mind right. If you do well, great. If you don’t, well, I haven’t been practicing.”

Beau Pré President Chuck Fields shot a 75, which puts him in striking distance heading into today. Fields said in addition to a club championship, he’s also shooting for a spot in the Beau Pré Cup by finishing in the top 15.

“For our members, this is the premier event of the year,” Fields said. “It’s also one of the ways you qualify for the Beau Pré Cup in September. That’s my goal, to finish in the top 15. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.”

Tee times for day two of the club championship start at 10 a.m. today.
