Over the last few years we have had many agricultural groups come tour Adams County.

These groups include everything from students of the University of Kentucky to State County Agent Associations.

The reason is simple, Adams County is fortunate to have one of the most diverse agricultural spectrums in all of southwest Mississippi. We can offer these adult groups educational opportunities in every area from exotic wildlife management to advanced equine operations or from basic sod farm production to large-scale farming operations.

While these tours have all revolved around adult education and application, the Adams County Extension Service, Adams County Farm Bureau Federation, and Soil and Water Conservation Service are working together to provide third- through fifth-grade students two days of agricultural and farming educational tours.

The Adams County Farm Camp will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 5 and 6, starting and ending at the Adams County Extension Service office.

This camp will include hands-on teaching and education into how agriculture allows us to live our daily lives.

They will learn the process of identifying trees, understanding how the ecosystem of a pond works and how Global Positioning Systems are used in farming and other aspects of agriculture. We will visit seven local farming operations over two days and specifically learn about cattle, conservation, aquatic pond management, horses, sod production, blueberry management, wildlife observation, forestry and farming in the field.

Hands-on activities will include removing sod and exploring its root systems, picking blueberries and seeing how it is accomplished on a large scale operation, learning how to use veterinary medicine to protect horses’ legs, using nets to measure fish populations, and much more at every stop.

The camp is limited to the first 30 kids to sign up and pay their $15 registration fee.

The fees will help cover cost associated with transportation, lunch both days, camp T-shirt, supplies, and great things to bring home with them.
