Green Wave prepares for Game 3

NATCHEZ — The Cathedral High School baseball team dropped Game 1 of its South State title series with Nanih Waiya on the road before returning home for Game 2.
The Green Wave couldn’t get much going offensively in their 4-2 loss Thursday, but Cathedral finally got the big hit in Game 2 Friday.
Tied with Nanih Waiya 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Austin Chauvin singled in Blake Martin, making it 4-3. Starter Caleb Upton would go on to get the final three outs, forcing Game 3.
But Game 3 would have to wait a few days. Originally scheduled for Saturday, heavy rain forced Nanih Waiya to postpone the game. The Green Wave will now travel to Nanih Waiya today for a 5 p.m. game.
Cathedral baseball coach Craig Beesley said since Martin has had a few days off since starting Game 1, the Green Wave can hopefully put him on the mound today.
“I’m supposed to meet with Blake today to see how he’s feeling,” Beelsey said Sunday. “Hopefully we can get a few innings out of him at least.”
Cathedral softball
The Lady Green Wave kept things close with Nanih Waiya in Game 1 of the South State title series Thursday — until the later innings.
With Nanih Waiya leading 1-0 after four, Cathedral allowed nine runs in the final two innings to drop Game 1 10-0.
Game 2 was scheduled to take place at home Saturday, but rainy conditions forced the game to be postponed to 4 p.m. today. Game 3, if necessary, will immediately follow.
Despite being on the wrong end of a 10-0 loss Thursday, Cathedral softball coach Gary Blackwell said the game was not as lopsided as the score indicated.
“We just didn’t hit the ball like we normally do,” Blackwell said. “It was a lot better game than the score showed. We had no errors, they just got some key little bunts and a slap in, then the bases were loaded. Their No. 3 hitter gets up and hits a triple, then the next thing you know, it’s 5-0.”
Blackwell said his girls had runners on base every inning in Game 1 but couldn’t take advantage. That’s something that will have to change if Cathedral wants to advance to the state championship series.
“They just hit better than we did that day,” Blackwell said. “I think it’ll be a good ball game (today). We know what we have to do.”
Centreville Academy
The Tigers completed an impressive season with their second-consecutive MAIS Class AA state championship in baseball this past week.
Centreville won in come-from-behind fashion in Game 1 last Tuesday when the Tigers got down to their last out with no one on against Marshall Academy in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Although Centreville trailed 4-3, the Tigers wouldn’t go down without a fight. Cliff Hurst drew a walk, and Tyler Towles singled to left, sending Hurst to third. Towles later took second on a delayed steal, setting up runners on second and third with two outs.
Chance Humphries then gave the Tigers a 5-4 victory by lacing a two-out single that scored Hurst and Towles.
The Tigers had a much easier time in Game 2 Friday, blanking Marshall Academy 4-0 to take the series. After having their backs against the wall in Game 1, Hurst said it was pride that allowed them to not make that last out.
“Never giving up, that’s what this team was all about,” Hurst said.
“No matter how good an athlete is, you can never beat a fighter in the long run, no matter what you do. That’s what (head) coach (Jason) Horne and (assistant) coach Mark (Mann) instilled in us, to never quit fighting.”
For the Tigers’ six seniors — Hurst, Humphries, Towles, Hunter Devall, Ethan Nolan and Hunter Travis — winning back-to-back state championships was a good way to go out.
“It’s unbelievable,” Hurst said. “It’s never been done before, and it’s the way our seniors wanted to go out.”
