VIDALIA — With no record-breaking floods looming around the corner, this year’s Miss-Lou Relay for Life is back at the Vidalia Riverfront and ready to fight back against cancer.

The 2012 Relay will kick off at 4:30 p.m. today with survivor registration and will continue through the night, with closing ceremonies at 4 a.m. Saturday.

More than 50 teams will gather at 6 p.m. for the Relay welcome by Relay Committee Chair Sherry Kiser.

“We’re very excited to be back in Vidalia and, hopefully, have good weather,” Kiser said. “We’re hoping everyone in the Miss-Lou comes out and participates.”

Following the welcome, an opening prayer from the Rev. Darian Duckworth and welcome from Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Shane Seyfarth, who was diagnosed with colon cancer before it also spread to his lungs and liver, will be the survivor speaker at 6:45 p.m.

After Seyfarth’s speech, the survivor lap will take place, followed by the caregiver’s lap and balloon release.

The first themed lap of the evening will be a duct tape theme at 7: 30 p.m.

There will be a luminary service at 9 p.m., with the second lap, themed “searching/finding a cure,” starting at 9:45 p.m.

A new attraction this year will feature the release of a hundred sky-lanterns, which have been purchased in memory or honor of a loved one or friend, Kiser said.

The third lap will feature a “Racing for a Cure Box Car” theme, which begins at 12:15 a.m.

After the final theme lap, the team activities will begin.

Activities will include a boxcar race, make up artist, egg roll and jelly bean relay.

Easy Eddie and the Party Rockers will provide Relay entertainment from 8 to 9 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Money raised throughout the night will be added to the $117,000, which was collected at Tuesday’s bank night.

With 44 of those teams setting up tents and selling food, T-shirts and other goods, Kiser said she hopes enough money is raised to reach the $209,000 annual goal.

Closing ceremonies and presentation of team awards will conclude the Relay festivities at 4 a.m. Saturday.
