NATCHEZ — Whether it’s dog walking, window-shopping or golf club swinging, the weekend has lots to offer outdoors.

The gates open at 11 a.m. for the carnival portion, which ends at 4:30 p.m.

From 4:30 to 5 p.m., a jambalaya dinner will be cooked up by Carriage House chef Bingo Starr.

The 5 p.m. live auction will be followed by a womanless beauty pageant starring ACCS’s finest young men. Live auction will include gift baskets put together by each grade and the grand auction item will be two Kawasaki Mules.

ACCS varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders will provide babysitting services during the auction.

Adoption Day

The Natchez-Adams Humane Society will set up shop at Tractor Supply from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to flaunt their adoptable dogs and puppies.

NACHS board member Linda Kennon said a discounted price of $25 on black dogs and puppies, a group that gets adopted less frequently, will run until 3 p.m. Saturday. The regular adoption fee is $45.

The humane society will schedule appointments for dogs that have not been spayed or neutered and inform new owners when they can pick up their dogs.

With flowers blooming, so is the number of litters around town, Kennon said.

“We’re going to have lots of puppies,” Kennon said. “This time of year we are just bombarded.”

The adoption day will also have adult dogs, and cats will be available for adoption inside.

Kennon said the humane society will also have buckets out Saturday to beckon donations for rubber flooring to place underneath kennels.

The thick rubber flooring helps prevent diseases like Parvo from spreading and can be disinfected daily.

“Puppies are very susceptible to diseases,” Kennon said.

The shelter is trying to raise $900 to outfit the rest of the kennels with the rubber flooring, Kennon said.

Tractor Supply is located at 780 U.S. 61 North.

Chamber golf tournament

Golfers and tennis players can lather up the SPF and sign up for the 19th-annual Natchez-Adams Chamber of Commerce golf tournament and second-annual tennis tournament at Duncan Park from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Ball-drop tickets for $20 will buy a chance for a cash prize, and a hole-in-one prize will also be offered.

Registration for a limited number of participants is $30 for tennis and $100 for golf.

Call 601-442-1584 for information.

If weather permits it, the ball drop will be from a hot-air balloon.

Teen summit

Saturday will give teenagers a chance to talk about issues they all have in common but rarely seem to discuss, organizers said.

A second-annual teen summit from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Alcorn State University’s Natchez campus will give students from sixth grade to 12th grade in the Miss-Lou an opportunity to shed light on issues they might be keeping in the shadow of solitude.

“It’s just an opportunity (for young people) to get together and discuss things they might not normally discuss,” said Shawnese Davis, an organizer of the event.

Davis said approximately 200 students attended last year. This year topics of discussion will include bullying, academic success, youth court, health issues and more.

The speaker will be Pam Felder, a professor and coordinator of special education at ASU.

Davis said her sorority, the Zeta Delta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, along with other Greeks, is sponsoring the event.

The purpose of the event, Davis said, is to address a group of young people who often represent a large group of people who are affected by crisis or live in “crisis zones.”

Davis said students will break into groups of approximately five students and a moderator will lead discussions on various topics, giving them a chance to open up in a smaller setting.

“They’re going through the same things…and (the summit) gives them a chance to express themselves,” she said.

The summit will be hosted at the ASU School of Nursing. For more information call Brenda Jarvis at 601-442-1400.

Those who are not yet registered can do so Saturday morning.

Concert in Vidalia

Local talents Lisa Spann and Rod Payne will be featured at “A Cabaret of Familiar Melodies” concert series program at 7 p.m. at Concordia Bank in Vidalia.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Concordia Parish Library.

Jefferson Military College cadet reunion

The Jefferson Military College will have its annual reunion for former cadets and their families and friends today and Saturday.

From 5 to 8 p.m. today, a reception will be hosted in the Barrell Room at Bowie’s Tavern.

On Saturday, the annual business meeting of the JMC foundation will be from 9 a.m. to noon on the campus.

The speaker will be Professor Jim Wiggins, who will speak about the Civil War. Dinner for former cadets and their families and friends will be served.

Confederate Memorial Day Services

Maj. Gen. William T. Martin Camp 590 Confederate Memorial Day services will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The services will be at Natchez City Cemetery at the lot of the unknown confederates behind the office. Guests will be Alan Palmer, the Mississippi division commander.
