NATCHEZ — Thunderstorms and strong winds moved through the Miss-Lou Monday afternoon leaving only minor damage from a few downed trees, momentary power outages and no reported injuries.
The area was under a severe thunderstorm warning from approximately 2:15 p.m. until 3:15 p.m.
Adams County Emergency Management Director Stan Owens said that winds of up to 38 miles per hour were recorded at the Natchez-Adams County Airport. He said a 31-mile-per-hour gust was recorded in the city at the Emergency Operation Center downtown.
By approximately 3 p.m., high winds had blown apart the Taco Bell sign on U.S. 61 South and downed tree limbs on Lower Woodville and Bryan roads.
Taco Bell’s General Manager Debra Brown said she and her employees did not realize the wind was blowing very hard until they saw the restaurant’s sign blow off its pole.
“Before we could even realize anything was going on, the sign was flying across the road and the what was left on the pole was getting ripped apart,” Brown said.
Owens said dime-sized hail was reported in the areas of Martin Luther King Jr. and Steamplant roads. Most of the reports, Owens said, were downed trees in the Washington, Cranfield and Kingston areas.
Entergy Customer Service Manager Tim Runnels said most outages were scattered throughout Adams County, with no more than 100 customers without power during the height of the storm.
Natchez Police Capt. Tom McGehee said a tree limb fell on one of the department’s patrol cars and damaged the windshield at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office’s public information officer Kathleen Stevens said the office responded to a few calls of trees down in the Wildsville, Monterey and Boggy Bayou areas. Stevens said no injuries were reported.
Concordia Parish Emergency Management Director Morris White said he received no reports of damages to residences or injuries.
Owens said the area has been fortunate to have avoided any major damage during the storms in recent weeks.
“We dodged another bullet,” he said.
