FERRIDAY — Scoring high enough on the ACT to get into his dream college wasn’t enough to give one freshman a case of senioritis.
Ferriday High School 10th grader Cailyn Glen took the standardized test in June, when he was a freshman, without any pressure or convincing.
“I knew I was going to have to take it to get into college, so I just wanted to ahead and see how hard it was,” Glen said. “The hardest was the math section, because I hadn’t seen a lot of the problems on there before.”
Scoring a 26 on his first attempt, Glen said he was pleased with the score, but knew it could be higher.
“I’m going to take it again this summer and study more,” Glen said. “Getting a higher math score is my main goal, because now I’ve seen a lot of the problems in the classroom.”
With aspirations of studying physical therapy, Glen said his first college of choice is Louisiana State University.
And even though they only require a 22 on the ACT to be accepted, Glen said he hopes a higher score will also bring much-needed scholarships his way.
“I’m trying to get the best scholarship I can right now,” Glen said. “Anything would help out.”
Apart from hitting the books, Glen also plays football and runs track for Ferriday High.
Despite the allure of scholarships to play collegiate sports, Glen said he wants to ditch athletics after high school to focus on his studies.
“After high school, I’ll be done with sports,” Glen said. “College is going to be hard enough, and those things would just slow me down.”
But for now, Glen said he will continue juggling school, studying for the ACT and playing sports — something he says always keeps him occupied.
“It was kind of hard at first because practice would get out late, and then I would still have homework to do,” Glen said. “It’s just routine now, and I always have something to do.”
