NATCHEZ — Baseball at Chester Willis Field was put on hold for at least a few more days after heavy rains moved through the area Saturday.

Natchez High School and Cathedral High School were set to square off in an exhibition game on the field they share Saturday morning, but wet conditions made playing unrealistic, NHS head coach Skip Golding said.

The exhibition matchup was moved to Tuesday, with both teams’ junior varsity squads playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity teams playing at 6:30 p.m. Each game will last four innings.

Golding said he was happy the Bulldogs and Green Wave would have a chance to get the exhibition games in even after having to postpone the matchups. Playing in exhibition games helps him decide which players will ultimately make the JV and varsity squads, Golding said.

“If you lose these games, you lose the opportunity to see (which players) you’re going to play when you open up next Saturday,” Golding said.

“Everyone’s a question mark right now, so you just have to see who’s hot. We’ll have nine guys play the first game and nine guys play the second game, and we have to figure out who’s playing what and who’s batting where.”

Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said he would also use the exhibition games as a means to evaluate which players will round out his varsity roster.

“We’ve still got two or three spots open on varsity that we’re trying to settle the first two or three weeks of the season,” Beesley said.

“We have six or seven starters returning, depending on who’s pitching. If Blake Martin pitches, we have two spots in the outfield to find. If Collin Hammons pitches, we have to find a corner infield player.”

Beesley also said exhibition games allow his team to get a different look than they would in a regular practice setting.

“It gives you a chance to face live pitching in a game-type situation,” Beesley said. “We haven’t had a chance to really do that with the weather being as bad as it’s been, and with other kids playing basketball, we’ve only had 11 to 12 kids practicing (until recently). It’s hard to get a scrimmage-type atmosphere with that few amount of players.”

The forecast for Tuesday is sunny with highs around 70.
