As we prepare for an all-important vote on the construction of the Magnolia Bluffs Casino, you, the citizens of Natchez, need to be aware of several important points.

This new operation will provide:

• 300 new jobs,

• $45 million investment,

• 3.2 percent in gross revenues, which averages roughly $800,000 per year,

• $1 million per year plus percentages in lease payments to the city,

• $225,000 per year for community development from now on,

• $1 million payment toward a recreation facility.

• Additional sales tax to meet the city’s financial obligations,

• Financial benefit to local businesses, which will have preferred status.

When I was elected mayor, you, the citizens of Natchez, expected me to create jobs, boost the economy, increase tourism and develop a recreational facility. This project allows us to achieve these goals.

Most of you know me and through this process, I have gotten up every day committed to work for you. This may be a one-time opportunity to provide this income and job-producing business within the city limits.

I understand that some of you may have some concerns with the gaming and development of the bluff area.

However, it is my responsibility as your mayor to make sure your coffers are full, so we can provide jobs for our citizens, keep our residents safe, pay our first responders, improve infrastructure and meet other financial obligations.

Additionally, for the ones of you who have concerns over the appearance of the development, please understand that the park provided in the lease will give Natchezians access to the riverfront for the first time in my lifetime.

Coupled with the Natchez Trails Project, this development provides a recreational and scenic boost to the economy and tourism. While these visitors are here, they will spend money here, boosting our economy. As a matter of fact, this park will be constructed as a gift to the city by Magnolia Bluffs Casino.

We have seen our community divided, but all big projects deserve a fair hearing in the public. As a fourth generation Natchezian, I would never sell our city short in any area or negotiation. This is simply the best opportunity that we have had in the past 15 years to advance Natchez. As your mayor, I am passionate about this project because I am committed to our community and dedicated to progress.

Jake Middleton is mayor of Natchez.
