NATCHEZ — A parade will roll, art will pop, trees will be sold and cats will compete for purrfection — and it’s all happening this weekend in the Miss-Lou.

Mardi Gras parade

The Krewe of the Natchez Indians will roll for the first time at 6 p.m. Friday with a number of floats to see and throws to be caught.

Line-up for the parade will begin at 3 p.m. on Broadway Street.

The parade will take the place of the Krewe of Alpheus parade.

“We normally participate in Alpheus’ parade, and we decided we want to keep the tradition of a night parade going,” said Robert McNeely, krewe president.

Majestic Queen VI YaMika S. Thomas and Big Chief VI Reggie Thomas, along members of their royal court and krewe founders Robert and Jacqueline McNeely, will also participate in the parade.

Adoption day

A pet adoption day, which was canceled last weekend due to rain, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Home Hardware on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.

The Natchez Adams County Humane Society-sponsored adoption day, titled “I’m a big dog now,” will showcase large dogs and adult dogs.

Shelter Manager Linda Kennon said the shelter has a variety of big dogs, including husky, golden retriever and Labrador mixes, which need good homes.

“Any dogs adopted at this event will truly be lives saved,” NACHS board member Kathy Fitch said.

The adoption fee is $45. The humane society will schedule appointments for dogs that have not been spayed or neutered and inform new owners when they can pick up their dogs.

Raffle tickets for a medium-sized wire kennel donated by Home Hardware can be purchased at the event for $5. The kennel giveaway is at 3 p.m.
