Prep girls roundups: Prentiss ends Wilkinson County’s season

FAYETTE — After scoring just six points in the first quarter, the Prentiss Lady Bulldogs went on a tear over the last three quarters and pulled off a stunning upset of Wilkinson County in the first round of the MHSAA Region 7-3A Tournament Tuesday night at Jefferson County High School.

Led by QuMekia Williams and Saetria Walker with 18 points each, sixth-seeded Prentiss ended Wilkinson County’s season with a 69-53 win.

Prentiss’ unexpected comeback began in the second quarter when it outscored Wilkinson County 23-12 for a 29-26 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs upped their lead to six points by the end of the third quarter at 50-44 and then capped off the victory by holding the Lady Wildcats to just nine points in the fourth quarter while scoring 19 points themselves.

Linesia Palmer led Wilkinson County with a game-high 28 points while Maleasia Slack chipped in with 14 points. Next up for Prentiss is No. 2 seed and host Jefferson County Thursday at 7 p.m. in a semifinal-round match-up.

Brandon 91, Natchez High 89 (3 OT)

JACKSON — Ashley Minor led the Natchez High Lady Bulldogs with a game-high 34 points, but it was not quite enough as they lost a heartbreaker to the Brandon Lady Bulldogs in triple overtime Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the MHSAA Region 6-6A Tournament at Forest Hill High School.

The two teams went into the third overtime period tied at 81-81, but second-seeded Brandon outscored third-seeded Natchez High 10-8 to advance to Friday night’s girls’ championship game while ending the season for Natchez High. Brandon was led by Shanese Carter and Doshua McCray with 20 points each and Cam Campbell added 15 points.

Natchez High (19-8) got 19 points from Keyana Miller and 15 points from Kiana Jones. The Lady Bulldogs had a 45-44 lead after three quarters of play, but Brandon forced overtime by outscoring them 15-14.

Oak Forest 51, Trinity Episcopal 37

AMITE, La. — Meaghan Durand finished with 14 points and Lindsey Neal had 12 points as the Oak Forest Academy Lady Yellow Jackets defeated the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints Tuesday night.

Oak Forest outscored Trinity in each of the first three quarters. At halftime, the Lady Yellow Jackets had a 24-12 lead and by the time the third quarter was over, they had a 39-20 lead over the Lady Saints.

Trinity Episcopal (8-18) was led by Abbey Ashmore with 13 points while Rosie Woods and Mallory Lancaster chipped in with eight points each. The Lady Saints are the No. 4 seed in the MAIS District 5-AA Tournament, which will take place at Adams County Christian School, and will take on top-seeded and second-ranked Brookhaven Academy Thursday at 4 p.m.

Lakeside 68, Ferriday 47

SIBLEY, La. — Five players scored at least seven points for Lakeside as the Lady Warriors used a big first half to defeat the Ferriday Lady Trojans Tuesday night in LHSAA District 2-2A action.

Leading the way for Lakeside were S. Collins with 19 points, J. Bridges with 15 points and F. Miles with 11 points. The Lady Warriors had a 16-9 lead over Ferriday at the end of the first quarter and when halftime arrived they had a 35-18 advantage over the Lady Trojans.

Ferriday (4-17, 1-8) was led by Sha’Keria Kelly with a game-high 22 points and MeElle Reed scored 16 points. The Lady Trojans play at Jonesboro-Hodge Friday night.

Block 34, St. Mary’s 26

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Quinnesha Branch led Block with nine points and Ta-Chundra Johnson had eight points as the Lady Bears defeated the St. Mary’s Lady Tigers in an LHSAA District 4-1A game Tuesday night.

St. Mary’s led Block 10-9 after one quarter of play, but the Lady Bears put the clamps on the Lady Tigers in the second and third quarters to take control of the game. Block took a 17-14 lead into halftime and then outscored St. Mary’s 6-0 in the third quarter for a 23-14 lead.

Block (9-12, 6-1) also got seven points from Bria Mays and six points from Rosie Jefferson. The Lady Bears next play at Northwood-Lena Friday night.

Oak Hill 52, Monterey 26

ELMER, La. — It was a tough Tuesday night for the Monterey Lady Wolves as they were doubled up by the Oak Hill Lady Rams with the District 4-B championship on the line.

The game was close throughout the first half and Oak Hill was leading Monterey by just two points at halftime, 17-15. But the Lady Rams took control of the game early in the third quarter and never looked back. They scored 14 points in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth. Meanwhile, Monterey managed just four points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth.

Reagan Tiffee was the only player for Monterey to reach double figures with 10 points. The Lady Wolves (20-8, 6-2) finished in second place outright in district play. They next play at Evans in the regular-season finale.
