NATCHEZ — A fender bender turned muddy Under-the-Hill early Sunday morning when a pick-up truck nudged a 1995 green Saab into the Mississippi River.

The girlfriend of the owner of the Saab entered the Under-the-Hill Saloon to tell him his car had been knocked into the river, a Natchez police report says.

“(The owner) said when he came outside the saloon, he saw car his car floating down the river,” the report says.

Witnesses outside the Saloon during the incident said they saw a four-door white truck closing in on the car, and one woman yelled at the driver to stop before they heard a noise.

Once hit, the Saab rolled down the boat ramp and into the river.

Witnesses said onlookers told the driver of the truck what he had done, and the driver got out of his car to look.

The driver then reportedly left the scene and later returned, telling police he was unaware he had hit the car.

Natchez Interim Police Chief Danny White said a charge of leaving the scene of an accident is under investigation. White said he is unsure where the car was but that it would likely be pulled out of the river. White said he was unsure which agency would handle it.

The incident was reported to NPD at 12:24 a.m.
