Retired educators staying active

The Retired Education Personnel of Mississippi — Southwest Unit closed out the term of the present officers with a covered dish luncheon at Zion Chapel A.M.E. Church on Thursday at the regular monthly meeting .
The unit has been very supportive to the Natchez community with it’s many “Community Service Projects;” namely The American Red Cross, American Cancer Society (Relay for Life), Armstrong Library, Natchez Children’s Home, United Way of the Greater Miss-Lou, The Stewpot, State Mental Hospital, NAPAC, two high school senior scholarships, the state high school scholarship program and the Adopt-A-School (Frazier Primary is ours). We are in no way limited to any projects.
We have approximately 60 financial members, but we would like that all retired personnel in the southwest join our unit and then we could do even more. We are not all about work and no play. Join the unit be a part of a group that worked in all areas of education.
If you noticed, as our name implies, “teacher” is no longer in the name because the lives of our children were and still are touched by every facet of the education. We need the bus drivers, cafeteria and maintenance workers, office staffers, administrators, any and all retired personnel.
The unit meets on the Thursday of each month except in June, July and August. The unit was led for the past two years by following officers: Bonita D. Reed, president, Barbara S. Winston, vice president, Lillian C. Edney, secretary, Betty S. Bowser, assistant secretary, Lee J. Braxton, financial secretary, Evelyn H. Smith, treasurer, Georgia C. Oliver, chaplain and Emma R. Jackson, parliamentarian.
Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
