NATCHEZ — At first, Adams County Sheriff’s deputies thought their drug dog, Scout, was preoccupied with hunger when she stuck her nose in a five-gallon bucket of dog food during a warrant investigation Wednesday night.

But unluckily for arrestee Steven L. Bindon, the golden retriever’s nose was on track to finding, hidden in the kibbles, bits of the 51 grams of crack cocaine recovered at Bindon’s 13 Old Wilson Lane residence, Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said.

“It took us a second to figure out there was dope in there,” Mayfield said.

Deputies also recovered from the scene 84 Xanax pills, 90 milliliters of codeine, a small amount of cocaine and two loaded firearm clips throughout the house.

Mayfield said the drugs have an approximate street value of $5,500 in addition to the $1,800 in cash, which was also recovered at the scene.

Bindon, 34, was booked at the sheriff’s office at 1:21 a.m. Thursday on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of Xanax with intent to distribute, possession codeine and possession of marijuana.

His total bond has been set at $121,000.
