Louisiana roundups: Ferriday falls to good Jennings team on HC

FERRIDAY — Ferriday head football coach Richard Oliver didn’t exactly schedule a team he knew his team would easily take care on their homecoming night.
Instead, the Trojans took on a Jennings team that went into Friday night’s game with a 3-1 record and the No. 9 spot in the latest Class 3A power ratings. And its only loss was to Eunice — by a mere three points.
And it was a close game throughout, but Ferriday was unable to wrestle the lead away from Jennings as the Bulldogs pulled away late for a 31-19 win over the Trojans.
“We got it close, 24-19, and our defense couldn’t hold their offense,” Oliver said. “They made the plays and scored a touchdown late. We ran the ball good. Our kids played hard. But they played better than us. They’re ranked No. 8 in the state for a reason.”
Ferriday (2-3) will now have to shift its focus to the LHSAA District 2-2A portion of its schedule. The Trojans open up district play next Friday at home against Jonesboro-Hodge at 7 p.m.
Donaldsonville 56, Block 0
JONESVILLE — Block did not commit a single turnover, but its offense had its share of problems moving the ball on Donaldsonville’s defense. And it showed as the Bears were shut out by the Tigers at homecoming Friday night.
“We couldn’t get anything going. They just wore us down,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said. “The kids didn’t match their intensity. But that happens sometimes. The only thing we got out of this game was no one got hurt.”
Donaldsonville scored 30 points in the first quarter to quickly make this a lopsided game and added another 20 points in the second quarter. The Tigers’ defense limited the Bears to eight first downs and 139 yards of total offense — all on the ground.
Block (2-3) travels to Shreveport to take on Bossier next Friday at 7 p.m.
Baker 55, Vidalia 0
BAKER, La. — Vidalia and Baker went into Friday night’s game as the bottom two teams in the Class 3A power ratings — Vidalia at No. 56 and Baker at No. 57. And both with matching 0-4 records.
However, this game was over not long after it got started. Baker led 21-0 midway through the first quarter and never looked back as the Buffaloes steamrolled through the Vikings for their first win of the season.
Vidalia (0-5) starts District 3-3A action next Friday at Jena with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
