Civil War Encampment
Reenactment
The sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War presents a living history drama portraying the life of area slaves who joined forces with the Union Army — called Black and Blue Sesquicentennial.
Performances begin at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. at Historic Jefferson College.
The purpose of the event is to break a 150-year silence in Jefferson and Adams counties about slaves’ freedom plan in 1861.
Dozens of enslaved people in Natchez and Second Creek areas were poised to carry out a plan to self-liberate. Within two years, black Union Army soldiers marched through the Adams County, liberating the enslaved people.
Events open with a welcome dance at 11 a.m., followed by an Underground Railroad hike. Guest speaker Ronald F. Davis will speak following the hike, discussing the slave insurrection on Second Creek in 1861.
A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Songs will punctuate the event.
