County to vote on budget soon

NATCHEZ — The Adams County Board of Supervisors met briefly Monday for a budget meeting and determined the budget will not likely raise taxes.
While County Administrator Joe Murray said a tax increase or decrease involves many variables, the last number he has yet to plug into the budget depends on whether or not the county can refinance its road bond for this year’s $2.4 million asphalt overlay project.
Chancery Clerk Tommy O’Beirne said the county’s financial advisors are attempting to refinance the project from a five-year to a 10-year bond.
If refinancing is successful, the county’s first payment will be $270,000, O’Beirne said.
O’Beirne said the county’s first payment including interest will be $521,000 if it cannot refinance the bond with Trustmark Bank.
Murray said if the county has to pay the full payment on a five-year note, the county could possibly avoid a tax increase by taking funds from the asphalt budget.
“I don’t see anywhere else you could get it from,” Murray said.
The board planned Monday to meet Tuesday morning. O’Beirne said he should have more information Tuesday about the road bond payments.
The board must adopt its budget by Wednesday in order to meet the Sept. 1 deadline. But Murray said he hopes to adopt the budget Tuesday since he will be in McComb Wednesday for a conference.
