VIDALIA — The Vidalia aldermen knew what they were doing at their meeting Tuesday when they passed an occupational license for America’s Gold Buyer’s, LLC, a gold buying business to set up shop at 1643 Carter Street.
“(Gold is selling) for $1,700 an ounce, and it’s projected to go to $2,400,” one man who attended the meeting said.
The aldermen also adopted a millage for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, but it didn’t take them long to reach that decision, either.
It stayed the same as it’s been for years — 3.31— according to Mayor Hyram Copeland.
In other news:
• The board granted City Manager Ken Walker permission to enter the city into a 90-day option to sell a stretch of land to a developer that’s interested in potentially developing some of the area off of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Walker said the developer would be interested in building 20 acres of infrastructure at a time, at approximately three houses per acre, allowing room for green space.
• Aldermen authorized for the advertising of the city’s surplus vehicles and equipment to begin in September.
“We probably need to start getting rid of them,” Copeland said.
