FAYETTE — A former Jefferson County school teacher died sometime Friday night or Saturday morning in a house fire, Sheriff Peter Walker said.
The fire department was called to the house of Victor Heidelberg, 52, on Avondale Road just after 11 p.m.
Heidelberg spoke with a friend via telephone at approximately 11 p.m. Friday, Walker said.
“We’re not certain of the cause of the fire right now,” Walker said. “However, the fire marshal is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.”
Heidelberg’s body, discovered Saturday morning, was burned beyond recognition, he said, and the remains were recovered from the area where a bedroom would have been on the second level of the house.
“We have no suspicions of foul play at this time,” Walker said. “We’re not ruling it out, but we’re waiting on the results from the crime lab.
“We don’t know whether the fire was set. We know there was no electricity to the home. It was off for one reason or another.”
No one else was in the house at the time of the fire, Walker said.
