Jefferson Co. school memories sought
Published 12:00 am Tuesday, June 28, 2011
We are looking for former students or teachers of Poplar Hill School of Fayette, Jefferson County to assist us in our mission to restore and refurbish our history. Poplar Hill School is the only African American school and the first school in Jefferson County to be recognized for its historic significance by the National Register of Historic Places, a division of the National Park Service. The school was placed on the register in March 2010.
Our mission at this time is to locate old photos of Poplar Hill School and Church. In addition, if anyone has any pictures of students who were in attendance, as well as artifacts, ie: report cards, pencils, papers, grade books, text books, pictures of teachers, maybe even an article of clothing worn to school, notes possibly written to a parent, anything that would have been a part of Poplar Hill School, we would be interested in seeing those as well. Also, if you have stories you wish to share please contact us.
Like the men and women who built this school and taught the children of this community; we will need to bring together the same fortitude, energy, determination and financial support for the refurbishing and restoration of this historic facility. We hope that you will be able to support our mission if you can please contact Mr. Rosevelt Cruel at 601-786-3690 or 601-786-1301.
