NATCHEZ — Area residents got a taste of what summer in the Miss-Lou will be like Saturday when the City of Natchez and the Town of Ferriday both hosted their first Second Saturday celebration of the season.
The festivities started at 11 a.m. in Ferriday, where the Rockabilly Plaza was grooving to the tunes of local artists Andy Guida and Ben Lewis.
“It was just another music-filled day in Ferriday,” concert attendee and Vidalia resident Trevor Rutland said. “And there just isn’t anything better than a free concert and nice weather.”
Rutland said he always enjoys a good concert, and the atmosphere at the show in Ferriday Saturday was something he could get used too.
“It was just nice to be able to come out during the summer and have something to do,” he said. “Especially when it is as relaxing as it was (Saturday).”
Ferriday resident Quentin Whitmore said the weather, while hot, was perfect for the free concert.
“It may have been too hot for some people, but it was just right for me,” he said. “The sun was shining, the music was playing and it just felt like a good day to be outside.”
Whitmore said he normally spends his Saturday mornings in his bed, but the temptation of free music got him out of the house.
“It is nice to not be stuck inside looking for something to do,” he said. “It’s summer. You are supposed to be outside enjoying the weather.”
The Miss-Lou’s busy day continued at 5 p.m. across the river, where area residents continued to enjoy the Second Saturday celebrations in Natchez with a little shopping, music, art and even some refreshments.
“It was a beautiful night to just walk around downtown Natchez,” Fayette resident Jennifer Raines said. “There is just something about the city.”
Raines spent her night shopping across the city’s downtown stores, and said she could not have asked for a more relaxing Saturday evening.
“I usually go shop during the middle of the day, and that can be very nerve-wracking, especially with the heat,” she said. “It was nice to have stores open at different hours. I think I have a new monthly pastime.”
Natchez resident Lane Daniels said he enjoyed his time eating and shopping Saturday night in downtown Natchez.
“It was a nice night to walk around the city and enjoy the evening,” he said. “There is nothing wrong with a little wine and some great food to cap off the first day of the weekend.”
Daniels said the Second Saturday festivities are something he hopes to see continued for a long time.
“It just feels so good to be out and about with so many other people,” he said. “It just feels like little events like this really bring everyone in the area together.”
Daniels said he can’t wait for next month’s Second Saturday, and that he hopes to see more people come out and enjoy what their city has to offer.
