BUTTE LAROSE, La. (AP) — Residents of Butte LaRose are facing a mandatory evacuation as backwater from the swollen Atchafalaya River creeps toward homes in the Cajun community.
The St. Martin Parish sheriff’s department says nobody will be allowed to enter the town once the order takes effect Tuesday at noon. The mandatory evacuation was set for Saturday morning, but the parish president postponed it because floodwaters were rising slower than anticipated.
Most of Butte LaRose’s roughly 650 residents elected to evacuate after the Army Corps of Engineers opened the Morganza floodway, diverting water from the Mississippi River into the Atchafalaya Basin. Only a handful of residents who intend to stay have signed forms indicating they recognize the risks.
Farther upriver on Monday, St. Landry Parish lifted a mandatory evacuation for parts of the parish.
