5 p.m. update: State, congressional leaders review status of riverfront

VIDALIA — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, U.S. Sen. David Vitter and Fifth District Rep. Rodney Alexander all viewed the high waters, touring the Vidalia Riverfront and speaking with Concordia Parish officials on the status of the area.

Jindal spoke to crowd gathered on the levee about the opening of the Morganza Spillway near Baton Rouge. Jindal said that while nothing is certain as of yet, he believes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will make the decision to open the spillway over the weekend. Later in Lake Providence he announced that federal officials had given approval to open the spillway as early as Saturday.

As of 3 p.m., the river stood at 60.02 feet, the highest-record water level ever at Natchez. Flood stage at Natchez is 48 feet.
