NATCHEZ — Adams County Emergency Management Director Stan Owens said the roads could be hazardous Sunday night and Monday morning.
Owens said there is a low chance of mixed wintry precipitation, or sleet, in the Miss-Lou, but his main concern was the rain on the roads.
“There is a chance we could wake up with hazardous road conditions, due to the freezing rain on our bridges and roadways,” Owens said. “It could be dangerous, especially if the temperature drops down to 30 Sunday night, like is expected.”
Owens said there is a 30-percent chance of rain Saturday night. While Sunday night, Owens said there is a 70-percent chance of rain, and from Sunday morning to night, Adams County will be under a winter storm watch. A winter storm watch means that there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
Owens said the U.S. 84 corridor is expected to have the highest percentage of seeing sleet this weekend.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service officials are also asking residents to prepare for possibly treacherous winter weather conditions this weekend.
“Because of the uncertainty in the forecast, it is important that all of our residents monitor the latest weather forecasts and conditions for their area,” MEMA Director Mike Womack said in a press release.
NWS forecasters say some areas north of I-20 could see four to eight inches of snow this weekend. The southern half of the state is expected to see a mix of snow, sleet, ice and rain, according to the reports.
Entergy Mississippi officials are preparing for potential power outages.
“Ice storms can pose significant threat to an electric system,” said Robbin Jeter, director of transmission and distribution operations for Entergy Mississippi in a press release. “Although the forecast doesn’t appear to be a major winter storm, we’re leaving nothing to chance. Our crews are prepared if bad weather strikes.”
Entergy officials recommend staying away from downed power lines, and avoid trying to trim or remove trees or debris on or near downed power lines.
MEMA officials recommend letting water drip from a faucet to relieve water pressure and help prevent pipes from bursting, in the event that it gets below freezing Sunday night.
