NATCHEZ — The names of a few of Vidalia’s key players will be forever remembered when driving into the future recreation complex.
At Tuesday’s Vidalia Board of Alderman meeting, Mayor Hyram Copeland announced the names of new streets that will eventually wind around the complex.
The streets will be named for Dr. John Fairbanks, Dr. William Thomas Polk, Johnny Lee Hoffpauir and Vernon Stevens.
Copeland handed Hoffpauir and Stevens a blue street sign bearing their names at the meeting, and family members of the deceased Fairbanks and Polk received signs, as well.
Fairbanks was a dentist and alderman who served the city for many years, Copeland said.
Polk, who Copeland referred to as “Vidalia’s doctor,” was a family practitioner who treated many residents who grew up in Vidalia.
Hoffpauir served as a teacher and coach at Vidalia High School for more than 30 years until his recent retirement and was instrumental in building athletic programs in Concordia Parish, Copeland said.
Copeland said Hoffpauir’s involvement in creating the new recreation complex should help it become one of the best recreational facilities in the state.
Stevens, a current alderman, is also a retired major in the military, and is heavily involved in the community. Stevens also worked until recently as the administrator for Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday for 23 years.
“I did not take the (street naming) lightly,” Copeland said.
“It is a great honor to recognize those who spent their lives serving Vidalia, La.”
Also at the meeting, the board approved the following:

4Occupational license and sign application for Affinity Home Care Inc. on 205 Carter St.
