CLAYTON — A Clayton man died when his Bingham Street house caught fire early Sunday morning.
Crews from Clayton Fire Department and the Concordia Parish Fire District No. 2 responded the fire that claimed the life of Howard Gene Denny Sr., 62, at approximately 1:50 a.m. Sunday, fire district chief Nolan Cothren said.
“When Clayton (Fire Department) got there, the truck that was under the carport and the front part of the house were already on fire,” Cothren said.
Cothren said it appears the fire started in the front living room of the wood-frame house, but the exact cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office.
“We think that might have been the room that Mr. Denny was sleeping in when the fire started,” Cothren said.
Denny’s body was found at the back door of the house.
“It appears that he was headed out of the house and was overcome by the heat and smoke,” Cothren said.
Denny lived alone in the house.
Funeral services for Denny will be at 10 a.m. today at Clayton Pentecostal Church.
