NATCHEZ — When Suzan Hogue let her best friend talk her into volunteering for the head of gate relations in 1998, Hogue soon found the work was more than she expected.
However, Hogue kept up with the position for seven years since 2004, even when she had a newborn on the sidelines.
Hogue’s tough determination and willingness to step up to the plate helped her earn the Spirit of Steckler award Friday night.
The award is given annually to a deserving Great Mississippi River Balloon Race volunteer.
When Hogue made her acceptance speech on stage after the fireworks display, she admitted she was very surprised.
Hogue described how much she loved the balloon race and assured the crowd that she will always be available to help with anything relating to the balloon race.
“I’m so happy,” Hogue said.
Peter Burns, who gave the award to Hogue, said Hogue has given more than 20 years of service to the balloon race. Hogue, who has recently worked with the VIP tent since Melody Fuqua and the Vidalia Woman’s Club took over gate relations, said she loves the people she works with on the balloon race. Hogue said she has made many friends on the balloon race committee, and she finds it a good group of people with which to work.
Hogue said she is always willing help out with whatever task the balloon race president and her close friend, Babs Price, asks of her.
The Spirit of Steckler award is given in remembrance of longtime balloon race supporter Dr. David Steckler, who died in 1999. The award is presented to a volunteer who has unselfishly given his or her time to benefit the balloon race and the community with spirit and commitment.
