NATCHEZ — Former Trinity track athlete Jheri Dupré Ogden had numerous individual achievements while running track for the Saints.
But it was an accomplishment she had with her team that she holds in the highest regard.
And it was that accomplishment — a 2009 cross country state championship — that was rewarded when her jersey was hung on the Wall of Champions at Sports Center Tuesday morning.
“(The cross country championship) was definitely the best because it was with a team and not just myself,” Ogden said. “I started running cross country in the sixth grade and (winning the state title) was always the goal for all of us. And to finally do it in my senior year made all the hard work worth it.”
And now Ogden, who is now a student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, can look up on the wall and see her jersey hanging with other area athletic greats.
“It’s such an honor,” Ogden said. “When I would come in here I’d look at the wall and always admire the people who were up there. To have my jersey hanging beside them is amazing.”
In addition to helping the Lady Saints win the cross country state title last year, Ogden won individual state championships in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs when she was a sophomore, setting a state record in the 3,200.
Trinity track coach Doug Broome said Ogden was a special competitor.
“She’ll go down as one of the greatest distance runners in the history of the school,” Broome said. “She has a lot of natural ability and the desire to be the best. She always strives for perfection in everything that she does.”
