HATTIESBURG — Change has become pretty much a constant for Jarrett Hoffpauir over the last couple of years.
The Vidalia native has shuffled from Memphis to St. Louis to Las Vegas to Toronto and back to Vegas since 2008, but now he is ready for yet another chance.
Hoffpauir, who spent brief time in Major League Basball with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008 and Toronto Blue Jays in 2009, was picked up off waivers by the San Diego Padres late last week.
“I feel good about it,” Hoffpauir said of his move to San Diego. “They are a young team that is looking for players to come in there and turn some heads. That’s what I plan to do.”
Hoffpauir will attend spring training with the Padres with the hopes of making the opening day roster.
If not, he most likely will be optioned to the Padres’ AAA team in Portland, Ore.
For now, Hoffpauir is working out at Southern Miss and Pearl River Community College, where his brother Josh is the head coach.
“I’m doing my fielding and hitting work at Southern Miss with the other guys (on the team),” Hoffpauir said. “I’m also doing a lot of my hitting (at Pearl River).”
Hoffpauir has spent most of the last three years on the AAA teams of the Cardinals and Blue Jays.
Hoffpauir has played mostly second base in his career, but played some at third last year as the Blue Jays attempted to make him a utility infielder.
Hoffpauir said he didn’t know which position the Padres would want him at.
“They know I can play three infield positions (second base, third base and shortstop),” Hoffpauir said. “I don’t know if they’ll expect me to be a utility type player or compete for an everyday job.”
After spending brief time in the majors the last two seasons, Hoffpauir hopes this is the break he needs to secure a permanent spot in the big leagues.
“I know I can play there and belong,” Hoffpauir said. “It’s just about getting a break, and hopefully this will be the break that I need.”
