NAPAC museum vandalized

NATCHEZ — Darrell White doesn’t mind working hard to make the NAPAC Museum look good, but he doesn’t need anyone creating extra work for him.
White, director of the National Association for the Preservation of African-American Culture, arrived at work Friday morning to find a yard full of vandalism.
Broken beer bottles and busted concrete rocks littered the museum stairs and a globe lantern at the front of the property was destroyed.
Natchez Police were called to the scene at 8:30 a.m., and a report filed, but no arrests have been made.
White said he wasn’t sure if those who left the mess realized they were disgracing a city-owned building with historical and community significance.
“It could be something just as random as someone sitting around drinking beer and being foolish,” White said.
“Or it could have been of a more malicious nature, and that would be the even more disturbing thing.”
White will replace the broken lantern, but the process may not be easy, he said.
“It is difficult to locate because the lanterns themselves are more than 100 years old,” White said. “Finding the proper size has been difficult.”
White said the cost of the lantern may depend on their availability.
NAPAC’s building is on Main Street.
