WOODVILLE — The Wilkinson County Wildcats are hoping to build off the momentum of their big victory over Raymond as they get ready to travel to play Prentiss Friday night.
The Wildcats rode a huge second half surge from both their offense and defense to turn a 13-7 halftime lead into a 49-7 victory over Raymond last week, and coach Elbert Lyles wants his team to keep that momentum going against the Bulldogs.
“We came out in the second half against Raymond and were able to execute like we had worked on time and time again, and were able to make some plays on defense,” Lyles said. “That was a big win for us. Everything fell into place.”
And the 36-point second-half explosion was a huge confidence booster for the team, Lyles said.
“You definitely like to know your offense can put points on the board,” Lyles said. “They know what they can do if they execute like they are taught. Hopefully we can carry that on to the game against Prentiss.”
The Bulldogs bring a 2-0 record into Friday’s game, having defeated Amite County 14-12 and Bailey Magnet 40-20.
“They got a new coaching staff in place this past spring, so they run a different version of what they ran in the past,” Lyles said. “They are a pretty decent football team. They’re 2-0 and they get after you, so we’re going to have to have to be ready and do the things we’re taught to do in order to come out on top.”
And crisp execution is the main thing Lyles will be look for from his team on Friday night.
“We need to be able to execute both offensively and defensively,” Lyles said. “We can’t have any blown assignments or things of that nature. If we can alleviate that, we should be OK.”
