NATCHEZ — Adams County Administrator Joe Murray officially resigned Tuesday — just shy of one month after he was sworn in for the position.
Adams Board of Supervisors President Darryl Grennell said the board discussed Murray’s official resignation during a board meeting executive session, Tuesday.
Murray will return to his former job at the Mississippi State Tax Commission, where he worked as a special agent revenue officer.
Murray said he chose to leave the county job because he did not see himself enjoying it.
“I don’t think the (county administrator) job is something I would enjoy doing on a daily basis for an extended period of time,” Murray said.
He said the state tax commission gave him an opportunity return to his former job of 19 years — and he took it.
Murray said he appreciates how understanding the supervisors have been about his decision to leave.
Grennell said Murray will be missed.
“Joe did a great job with the budget process, and I didn’t want to see him go, but I can understand he wants to go back to his old job, Grennell said.
The board agreed Tuesday to advertise statewide for the position.
Murray’s last day as county administrator will be Sept. 15, which is the deadline for the county’s final budget.
Interim County Administrator Charlie Brown said he does not plan to work as county administrator until a new candidate is hired.
Brown, the county’s first administrator who served for 17 years, retired from the job in 2006.
Cathy Walker was hired and filled the position from 2004 to March 2010, when she was terminated 12 days before her resignation from the position was final.
The position stayed open for approximately five months.
Murray was hired from a pool of at least 22 applicants.
