Felter to correct taxpayer-funded number on sign

NATCHEZ — Signs advertising Supervisor S.E. “Spanky” Felter’s personal business have listed a taxpayer-funded cell phone number for years, but Felter acknowledged last week that the oversight will be corrected.
The sign on the side of S&L Spanky’s Storage on U.S. 61 North lists Felter’s county cell phone number.
A blank billboard on the property owned by Felter lists the same number.
Felter said his cell phone number was on the building and billboard before he switched to a county-paid phone.
Felter’s cell phone number has been the same for 10 to 15 years, and it has been displayed on U.S. 61 North since he purchased the billboard in 2002, he said.
He transferred his cell phone number to a county-paid plan in 2006 or 2007, Felter said.
“I never thought about that my (county cell phone) number was on that billboard,” Felter said.
Felter said he does not regularly conduct his storage business from his cell phone and has rarely received a call in reference to his storage business or billboard.
A main office number is highlighted on the building, and the county-paid cell phone number is listed below and in much smaller letters.
Felter said he plans to remove his county cell-phone number from the sign and billboard.
Felter used 27,382 minutes in a recent 12-month period for a total bill of $550.16. His minute usage was the 11th highest of all county’s nearly 60 phones.
